The formation of the Solidarity, Support and Solutions (S3) Committee of the MFN Advisory Board was prompted by the assaults communities of color experienced and continue to experience. Specifically, the disproportionate impact of COVID-19, the police attacks on Black communities across the country and the racist violence every day on Black, Indigenous and other people of color communities.
Oppression comes in multiple forms; and the environmental justice and climate justice work MFN member organizations do is deeply connected to the systemic racism that allows for police to brutalize communities of color and deny Black, Indigenous and other people of color communities adequate services and protections against COVID-19. This moment in time calls for more thoughtful action as we all work to protect our communities. As we continue to face these ongoing challenges, we do not seek to move back to the “normal” mode of operation.
The Solidarity, Support and Solutions Committee has been working in the spirit of the Moving Forward Network and within a Solidarity, Support and Solutions practice. This has garnered an action plan with components that will propel us all toward authentic, participatory, equitable and collective ANSWERS.
The Activities are intended to engage the whole member network of MFN in realizing Solidarity, Support and Solutions principles.
The S3 Practice includes a rapid response program which provides support to Network members faced with critical and/or emergency situations.
The MFN EJ Fund is a Network specific pool of funds used to redistribute resources from MFN’s three mainstream environmental organization members to MFN frontline EJ organizations, based on need.
The purpose of the MFN EJ Fund is to address the inequitable allocation of resources experienced across MFN between the community-based organizations and the mainstream environmental organizations. The MFN EJ Fund is intended to be one element of the overall Solidarity, Support and Solutions practice which is rooted in equity and environmental justice principles. One way that Earthjustice, NRDC, and the Union of Concerned Scientist are participating in the S3 practice is through $500,000 annually for two years.
The organizations in most financial need will receive the most support based on an equity scale.
The funds are to be allocated only to MFN frontline, EJ, community-based members as of May 31st 2021.
The funds will be allocated to groups for two years.
